hyperexteded knees and tibialis anterior pain

Dear all, I have a client who is a dancer with hyperextended knees and when she is doing open V heels, she expereiences tension in her tibialis anterior muscle. Do you have suggestions on how to avoid this? She also feels as if her L hip is tensing during this exercise. Could this be because she is not relaxing her hip? Or possibly because her L knee is more hyperextended than her R. Please help?

As a certifying instructor, I have dealt with hyper-extended knees on many occasions. You may want to start by having her soften her knees so she is not working the joint but the muscles. As a dancer, she may be accustomed to using her feet and not her powerhouse. Try to get her to relax her feet and really concentrate on using the adductors to keep the inner thighs together and not just her feet/lower leg. You can do this by working her in parallel (as a dancer she probably lives in turnout, make her do the opposite) with a pillow between her knees/ankles.
